Let’s check out the three frontrunners in the war of the smartphone operating systems: WebOS, Windows Mobile, and Symbian.

Palm Pre – the sleek one

So, representing Symbian, you have the Sony Ericsson Idou, with its double-hit combo of astounding camera and music. Flying the flag for Windows Mobile, there’s the Toshiba TG01, with astonishing power and an immense screen. But we’re discussing interfaces here, and one phone beats both of these powerhouses hands down: the groundbreaking Palm Pre. You see, the Palm Pre is built on an entirely custom interface called WebOS, that is easily the slickest, most intuitive interface that’s ever been released. With intuitive gesture controls and finger sweeps for EVERY action on the phone, the Palm Pre also brings in tight integration between its apps. Book a cinema ticket on one app, and the Palm Pre automatically updates your calendar with the time. Multitask many different apps, and watch the Palm Pre run without any effort or lag. In the world of interfaces, essentially, the Palm Pre just cannot be beaten!

Toshiba TG01

Windows Mobile, though, goes down a different route. You see, Windows Mobile needs two things to run at its best: a powerful processor and a big display. Well, say hello to the Toshiba TG01, the phone with the fastest processor AND the biggest display in the history of phones! Weighing in at 1GHz and 4.1 inches respectively, those specs mean that the Toshiba TG01 will run Windows Mobile more smoothly than any other phone in existence; as well as that with that immense screen, the Toshiba TG01 makes drilling down into menus, and actually getting into the internals of Windows, so much easier. If power is your thing (and lets be honest, who doesn’t want a powerful phone?), then the Toshiba TG01 is the phone for you!

2009's hottest new mobile technologies

Smartphones have always embraced new technology, and in 2009, three particular phones are taking mobile technology to a new high. Let’s check out these game-changers.

Toshiba TG01 – unleashing the true power of Windows Mobile

We start with a phone that really gives Windows Mobile the grunt it needs to run properly: the Toshiba TG01. In terms of outstanding new technologies, what the Toshiba TG01 brings to the party isn’t the 4.1 inch display (although that’s noteworthy in itself), but what’s inside it. The Toshiba TG01 uses a next-gen, dual-core Snapdragon processor, which runs at 1GHz, and that means the Toshiba TG01 is the most powerful phone in existence… which is good, because in terms of other features, a lot of other phones leave the Toshiba TG01 in the dust…

Sony Ericsson Idou – the camera phone, evolved

Phones such as the Sony Ericsson Idou…

It’s been included on this list because of two reasons. The first has to be the huge 12 megapixel camera the Sony Ericsson Idou comes equipped with, which arguably makes it the best camera phone ever to be made (so far). The second reason is because the Sony Ericsson Idou is the first handset to have the next incarnation of Symbian Touch, the version that’s going to be the Symbian Foundation OS. Imagine the power of Symbian with the sleekness of something like OS-X or the LG S-Class UI, and you get an idea of why the Sony Ericsson Idou is so hotly anticipated.

Palm Pre – the interface to end all interfaces

While we’re talking interfaces, however, even the Sony Ericsson Idou gets outdone by a phone that’s due out soon: the outstanding Palm Pre. What it brings to the party is the most intuitive interface ever seen on a mobile phone. The Palm Pre has slick animations and gesture controls throughout, so that anything you want to do is just a touch or a swipe away. Make no mistake, the Toshiba TG01 may get all the power, and Idou’s got that camera, but nothing can touch the Palm Pre in terms of elegance.
