The launch of the MotoFone
We now expect a lot from our cell phones – with even the phones given away free with contracts by companies like 3 and Vodafone coming equipped with digital cameras and Bluetooth ability. But some of us just want a phone to be a phone.
There are a lot of people out there who simply want a mobile you can send and receive calls and texts on, and that they can occasionally check the time on. They want a mobile that won’t connect itself to the internet, should it be bumped around in the wrong way. They crave a phone that’s still going to work after you’ve dropped it for the fifth time, and that doesn’t need to be recharged every hour.
Have I by any chance just described the phone of your dreams, then read on. Motorola have developed a phone for people like you. The MotoFone, as it is called, shares a lot of design features with the Motorola Razr phone, only without the web access, camera and other high-tech gadgets.
This pared-down phone has an incredible battery life, and the simplicity of its operation is second-to-none. This telecommunications breakthrough can easily lay claim to being the most energy efficient mobile in the world, and with the addition of a dynamo, it can be charged by riding a bike!
It manages to achieve this level of energy efficiency by using a new kind of display which can be best described as a kind of electronic paper. Unlike the LCD screens used in most mobile phones, this type of display does not require a backlight – as it behaves in exactly the same way as black ink does on white paper, making it highly visible in the majority of lighting conditions. This is the first global product to use this electronic paper technology although products like watches, fabrics and clothing, as well as electronic books are now on the way.
Due to the simplicity of the unit, this phone is somewhat cheaper to make than the majority of mobiles, and consequently it is one of the cheapest handsets to buy in the world So if you accidentally drop it down the toilet during a particularly hairy night out, it’s likely to still work perfectly, and if not, it could cost you as little as ?5 to replace!
